Hey Cheesie, Read your post as am heading to Korea again soon. I can totally relate to your story, except I had the experience in another country with Koreans travelers. The Korea travelers seemed rather stoic but they were the most chinchai, generous people I've met. The guys paid for my meals as well the 2 other Korean travelers with them, to public transport, one offered & drove me around on the motorcyle to see the places I haven't been to (as usual, nothing in return wanted) & I & other girls didn't have to pay when we went together to their all time fav place anywhere in the world, noraebang i.e. karaoke. These people were not traveling together, all were solo travelers but when it came to paying the guys would split the bill unequally (totally chinchai) & girls were never asked to pay, when I offered they just declined & moved on to the next topic. My encounter with them was very unlike my encounters with Westerners while traveling, happens too often that they'd offer to buy one a drink then later on ask if want to sleep with them :-s But these Korean dudes, they didn't even asked me anything personal (e.g.my occupation, age, etc), just my name to call me & mostly talk about the day & places to visit at the country & if I hadn't had my meal yet, one of them would offer to show me a place then would end up paying for me! & I never saw them again, we didn't exchange emails or anything even. I have other brief encounters in Korea with many people, who went out of the way to help in silence & then just a bye-bye or a bow :-s (only 1 person whom I sought help from asked me where am from. Speaking of that, most retail workers/hostel workers just assumed am either Jap or Chinese based on the language they call out to me or refer to me as to their colleagues The "Ilbon saram" or "Chungguk saram" :-s but they never asked to confirm even after my lame attempt to speak Korean back. Surprisingly, I get that question of where am from alot more in Malaysia whenever I go for hols out of KL) I have to say the Koreans are one off the warmest people I've met in my travels, though they seem abit distant, loud & appear "rude" sometimes but that doesn't mean they are cold inside. I think because of that, they are often misunderstood as snobbish or rude. This will be my 3rd trip to Korea in a year & my stay there has been between 2 to 3 weeks.
